"Desperate Housewives" In Russia

09/27/2006
By

Today I overheard one of my married lady friends named Lena talking with her girlfriends about how much they love to watch “Desperate Housewives” and “Sex in the City”.

I was contemplating a good cry in my coffee as I thought to myself..

“Oh No..”

“The Cultural Assimilation of Russia has just reached another milestone. All of these perfectly wonderful women are about to get ruined with another volley of Anti-Male Hollywood propaganda.”

“We are all DOOMED..”

So I sheepishly asked Lena preparing for the worst..

“Why are these shows so popular with Russian Women?”

What came next I couldn’t have made up if I tried.. Because in a completely straight and innocent tone she said..

“We like it because we want to see women with other problems… Problems we don’t have..”

A sly smile broke out on my face..

The kind of smile you might get if you realized that your back-up parachute just deployed properly with less then 500 feet of ground below you..

Being happy that I was going to live to jump another day.. there was still even more good news as she continued..

“Also.. Many Married Russian Women like to watch these shows so that their husbands can see that maybe their wives aren’t so bad after all..”

With this..

I knew I was not just going to have a safe landing.. but I was also going to hit the the red and white circular bulls-eye that was painted in the landing zone as well.

And my sly grin broke out into a fully mojo’d Austin Powers.. “Yeaah Baby!!”

Guys.. it just NEVER ceases to amaze me how much insight one can get from such simple little moments like this.

Moments that I hope you can experience yourself.

… Almost brings a tear to my eye. RUSSIAN women ROCK!

You know, I always asked a girl if she was a fan of “Sex in the City” or “Desperate Housewives” – if she was an avid watcher, I knew what I could expect from her – and I’m sure you guys have observed some of these consistencies in women you know who watch these types of shows.

That was just ONE of my tests.

The other test, as was mentioned in a post earlier this week, was to assess family history. If there had been any history of abuse or severe dysfunction, I knew that I would be suffering the consequences eventually.

It is sad, and I don’t mean to offend anyone or make generalizations, but these analyses are based on OBSERVATIONS in real life circumstances. Far too many guys have been there, done that.

If you really want to know what I think – television is poison. It is a shame that unless a person is a literature major, they will probably never read Tolstoy, Dickens, or Dostoevsky… maybe I’m just a dork who never got to watch television growing up, and doesn’t see any need to start today.

Well I may be a dork, but I won’t be putting up with a bunch of BS from chicks who just don’t get it. Go ahead guys – try it out yourselves. Do just what RW did and ask why they watch those shows. Unless they respond similarly to the Russian women mentioned above, prepare to have your hands full – and I don’t mean that in a good way.

Amazing what you can do in your life with the absence of a TV.. maybe something like.. start a blog on Russian Women ;) I hear ya man..

The thing you have to remember about all these shows is that they thrive on the projection of illusion, and market that illusion as reality. Then you have impressionable people (in both genders) who have never been taught how to think nor analyze accepting these shows as an accurate portrayal of how life really is, and that is how they should behave. Hence the mess. You also have people whose lives are so vapid and devoid of anything truly pleasurable that one of their only escapes is to live vicariously through these fictional characters.

Television has become our circus. Welcome to the 4th Rome.

The highest level of smokers are white, young women. Why? Because they saw the main charatcer smoke, so they wanted to emulate her. (her name was Carrie, I believe) Just shows how TV is so influential. And when we have male-bashing on Tv…well…you get the picture…

A Russia female friend of mine told me a new joke/proverb on the various qualities of women around the world, the punchline was that Hell exists and it would be married to a modern American woman. It is much funnier in Russian.

When I was single, there was a simple sociological experiment on women and the influence of pop culture on their mentality. I would do a simple registration on match.com. Do a keyword search on women with any popular female centered show or chick flick. The examples I would use words like Dharma and Greg, Sex and the City, Serendipity and many others that were popular at the time. You would find profiles stating: “Real life Dharma searching for her Greg.” Or Carrie Bradshaw and on and on.

Online dating services do provide a real good insight in the mind of modern women. I would recommend anyone trying the experiment.

match.com is a total freak show, as is yahoo personals. I can’t even read those ads anymore, they just make me sick.

Desperate Housewives makes me want to hurl into my coffee, no matter what country it’s aired in. The critics of TV back in the 40′s and 50′s were right, television is nothing but a poisonous intelectual wasteland, a Chernobyl for the brain. It’s noxious emmissions taint everything they touch, which is why toxic TV is as dangerous as hot fuel rods just removed from a nuclear reactor, only much more insidiously. No wonder Russian women get a belly laugh from Desperate Housewives, they know they have what many American women will never have. There’s hope for the world yet when women, wherever they may be, see this trash for what it is and don’t drink from the poisoned well.

Just passing by, loved the observation, it would seem that not only are the shops, entertainment and food etc becoming generic, so are our problems. They new how to broadcast tv in the 60′s…….only 4 hours a day!!!

    Hello striderpaul,

Thank you for visiting! Please keep participating and putting your 2 cents in. Take Care, GL

I thought the FAQ’s said there was a shortage of men in Russia, couldn’t that be a reason they don’t have those problems? But in reality, who really does have the same problems as the characters on desperate houswives? I guess there were those ladies on Oprah, but I don’t personally know anyone like that. One thing that is attractive about the shows Desperate Housewives and Sex and the City is their affluence. I don’t watch those shows, but when I did that’s the part that stuck out to me.

  11. rw_man on 10/01/2006 at 5:39 am

    KatyKane,
That’s EXACTLY what the producers of Desperate Housewives WANTS YOU to think. They want you to associate their show and the women’s behavior and lack of character with the “affluence level” that you see on TV.
Ask yourself this.. the next time you see a cosmetics or women’s products commercial.. do they show off girls living in poverty? Of course not because they want you to buy into the illusion of “affluence” and the “you can have it all” mentality..
99% of the women in the US will buy into this propaganda hook line and sinker and then get depressed later in life when they realize it’s not true.. if they do at all..
Maybe you can be that 1% that doesn’t. Every show has an agenda behind it. Some guy is trying to influence your thinking so that you will part with your cash.. Starting looking at everything around you in this manner and you might actually lower the barriers required for you to find real happiness. GL

I think KatyKane, like Jess, is beginning to see the big picture. Thank you KatyKane for following the Russian author Anton Chekov’s most famous advice, which was paying attention. I admire somone who thinks for him or herself and doesn’t just follow the other lemmings to the cliffs.

My wife (Japanese) watches Sex and the City a lot. She says she likes the “fashion.”

She was really surprised when I told her that show was written by two gay men!

Things aren’t always what they seem, especially in Hollywood!

  14. rw_man on 10/02/2006 at 8:08 am

    Thanks for the comment Mamonaku..

Yes.. I read about that a while ago.. ain’t that a trip..

2 Gay Guys manipulating the sexual attitudes of millions of Women around the world..

I’ve read that the promiscuity that is shown in Sex in the City is actually a reflection of the types of loose and fast sexuality that is common in the Gay subculture..

Talk about a huge and manipulative deception..

    Cheers, GL

  15. mamonaku on 10/02/2006 at 12:02 pm

    Exactly my friend.

And what’s really funny is that women have the most to lose when they support unlimited homosexuality.

    Check this link.

    http://www.catholiceducation.org/articles/homosexuality/ho0003.html

    Keep up the good work!!

  16. Taras on 10/02/2006 at 3:52 pm

The gay subculture is extremely promiscuous in general, and their ethos is indeed loose to put it politely. Hence it’s no surprise we see it reflected in Sluts in the City. On many occassions I’ve heard women gripe about all the men they meet are gay. If they make the connection between poison TV like Sluts in the City and their own troubles, they’d stop watching this filth immediately and encourage others to do the same. I see no sign of that belated awkening taking place, so it appears it’ll be a repeat of Nero fiddling while Rome burns to the ground.

  17. WK on 10/02/2006 at 11:47 pm

Sex in the City? More like SLUTS in the City!

  18. Taras on 10/03/2006 at 12:15 am

That’s what I call it too WK. Gay men are often far more prosmiscous that most prostitutes can ever hope to be. That comes out in Skanky Sluts in the City because apparently these two cretins think all women should be as promiscous as many homosexual men are.

  19. brensgrrl on 11/16/2006 at 8:03 am

Can you say Promiscuous Player Men? I know you could!

If it’s wrong for women to be players, then it is equally wrong for men to play the field.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

  20. rw_man on 11/16/2006 at 5:18 pm

    Hello Again Brensgrrl..

Where in my blog do you see me or the others advocating sexual promiscuity for Men?

Your attempts at discrediting the Men in this group continue to show off your well established Ignorance.

  21. John on 11/24/2006 at 7:38 pm

I am a widower with 2 girls in my house. They watch soap. I dont, i sit on my computer (like right now) and try to read positive critical impulses for my brains. In my “younger” ages (read this subtile) at home, my mother and father also followed those well known Dynasty and Dallas series, etcetera… . Once I was mature enough I realized how my parents changed towards attitudes similar in those TV series. How they interact when there was a problem and how they solved it afterwards. HAHAHA !!! I’m afraid my 2 daughters are becomming the same victims of these brainwashing and society deteriorating events.
It is amazing how a part of these Russians seem to intercept these TV series. I am very surprised…. let us hope it remains this way. Probably a desperate hope (from my part)…

  22. rw_man on 11/25/2006 at 2:15 pm

    Hi John,

    Welcome Aboard..

Desperate Housewives has very little impact here because the demographics situation completely negates the possibility of a narcissistic woman that is into playing around every moving ahead in society. I believe it will stay that way for the time being.

Cheers and Good Luck to you.. GL

  23. Hazel on 07/10/2008 at 10:52 pm

Well, the things you find when you go snooping around :-)

I’m a little bit surprised by this subject. Living in a country with a fairly US influenced pop culture these shows are quite common, and I guess a lot of people identify with them in some way. However, Desperate Housewives to me seems like the most outlandish show ever and on top of that it is incredibly boring. I have a hard time trying to fathom why anyone (manhating or otherwise) would want to waste her time watching it. Sex and the City I see as having a little bit more merit, not that I have ever been an avid watcher of the show, but it is in my opinion at least fine for those days when you’re sick/exhausted/need to give your brain a time-out for whatever reason. Maybe this is just me, but I wouldn’t think anyone would have any difficulty not confusing it with reality. Seriously, nobody is that fond of her shoes! To me, every aspect of it seems quite extreme, and I definitely wouldn’t want to live like that, but still, I think it can be interesting to watch. And you do come away with that “well, at least I’m not making that much of a mess of my life” feeling. So I don’t think it’s that bad. And yes, I do have time to read some Tolstoy on top of that (“The Death of Ivan Ilyich” seems to be the perfect antidote to the materialistic approach to life advocated by tv-shows and magazines alike).

Anyway, not being the domestic goddess that some of these Russian women are, my point with this comment is merely that even Western women aren’t all THAT bad (in my opinion).

When I go to a café with my closest friends, we don’t talk about receptions, shoes or sex (personally I believe that one’s sex life ought to be discussed with the person one is having sex with, not everybody else), we end up discussing politics, our studies, our plans and hopes for the future. And afterwards we go for a walk about the city. So even if I can occasionally enjoy watching Sex and the City, it’s not something I at all try to emulate in my own life.

  24. Taras on 07/11/2008 at 12:57 am

I couldn’t agree with you more Hazel. How can any truly normal person sit through one episode?

  25. Westerngirl on 04/20/2010 at 12:37 am

I personaly never watched Desperate house wives or Sex in the City. I just don’t feel like seeing them. Tv is junk and therefore I don’t have cabel or satelite. Though to be fair my fault is being into all those crime drama shows in 90s and other show that followed them such as Dexter. But I guess that would be another topic. When I was in college the girls I knew were into the crime shows and tv shows such as Friends

  26. Gillian on 04/20/2010 at 3:39 pm

Personally, I hate those kinds of shows. They’re supposedly all about “feminism”, but I feel as though there couldn’t be a show that’s more disrespectful towards women as Sex and the City. It’s trash.

  27. Kolchak on 04/22/2010 at 11:58 pm

I hate those shows like Sex and the City or Deseperate Housewives. They create stupids stereotipes in the women and “idiotize”them.
Nothing more than trash, rubbish, specially dangerous for teenagers women.
