Russian Women and the Lack of Jealousy

09/17/2006
By

One of the things that really blew my mind when I got here was just how much Russian Women respect each other’s beauty without being jealous.

With all the girls I have ever know I have never met a Russian girl who ever showed any hint of jealousy towards another attractive woman. In fact just the opposite is true. I could be with a date walking down the street and the two of us could pass another group of beautiful girls and I will not hesitate to look at them. Nor would I ever “pretend” to NOT look at them.

Almost always the Russian girls that I am with will just smile at me innocently and say..

“Russian Women are really beautiful.. Yes?”

And I’ll just smile back and say..

“Yes.. they sure are…”

As you can guess.. this one little thing says a WHOLE LOT about their general character.

So let me give you my TOP 10 Reasons as to what this all means..

10. It says that a Russian Woman is openly proud of her country and with the many other beautiful women who also live there.

9. She admires and respects beauty in others just as much as she respects it in herself.

8. There is no shame given towards beauty because beautiful girls are openly admired and given straight adulation by this society. Beauty contests at the local, regional and national level are more accepted and widespread then they are in the States. There is not the slightest hint of feminist controversy over these events as being a form of “female exploitation by the male patriarchy”. I’ve been to quite a few of these contests and the women in the audience always greatly outnumber the men.

7. In-spite of the huge sexual competition these women face against each other in finding a good Man these Women DO NOT openly cut each other down like they often do in the States. Instead there is MUCH more focus on doing what she can to improve herself.

6. Because jealousy is a fundamental human emotion it still exists here in Russia just like anywhere else but open displays of jealousy by women are considered to be shameful and only magnifies the unpleasant fact that she is losing her man to a rival. I have only known of one woman the entire time I’ve been here who showed a great deal of jealousy and hostility when her husband left her for another woman. Even-though the husband was at fault this woman’s behavior totally marginalized her and caused people not to respect her.

5. There is an old cultural belief among Russian women that says that they are responsible or at fault if their man leaves them. Russian mothers will traditionally drill this belief into their daughters. Because of this if a man rejects them they will usually suffer this loss in complete silence and isolation. They will do everything possible to put on a brave face and to keep their composure at all cost.

4. Russian girls show absolutely no sign of jealousy or sadness when their girlfriends end up getting boyfriends or husbands. Again it’s just the opposite. They are very proud and happy when their girlfriends are able to get married even if they realize that their own chances for achieving this are slim.

3. Russian women have a high degree of REAL female camaraderie and excellent understanding with each other. They have extremely deep and meaningful relationships with their girlfriends which provide for a great deal or emotional strength and stability. For example it is almost unheard of for a Russian women to go to a psychologist for help in dealing with her own issues. In Russia these women are expected to go and confide in their girlfriends first and foremost.

2. Russian Women are physically close to each other without any hint of being lesbians. Russian women like to hold hands in public and often greet each other with a lite kiss on the lips. In this culture these open displays of affection simply means that these 2 women are friends and nothing else. Another example of this is to commonly see Mother’s with grown-up daughters still holding hands while walking down the street.

1. Above all.. what a lack of jealousy tells me about Russian Women is this.. It means that these ladies have the most valuable thing of all in their lives.. Something even more valuable then the beauty, intelligence and grace that is so abundant here.

It simply means that these Women have an IDENTITY.

An IDENTITY they are very proud of and rightfully so..

An IDENTITY which allows them to naturally relate to each other as women in ways that I have never seen before.

And an IDENTITY that gives these women a source of strength AND a foundation for their own well being.

And if you had all of this too..

Then you’d also understand why it’s pretty darn difficult to be jealous regardless of what you have or don’t have in your life.

You nailed it! A strong sense of who you are and what is important to you does wonders for an individual.

    Hi rule62..

Yes if you don’t have a good identity you are always left jumping from one bad decision to the next and often permanently ruining your life.

Right on target. For anyone who visits Russia for the first time it is like a blast of fresh air.

One comment about watching beautiful women in Ukraine. Summertime in Odessa. My first visit… I literally walked into a kiosk, because of the distractions walking to the nearest beach.

Wow, that’s awesome that you can actually look at a pretty girl with impunity! In the U.S., a woman will go out dressed like a whore, and then have the nerve to get angry if a guy looks her up and down! I remember staring at a woman with tight jeans and her cleavage hanging out, and her friend told me “Take a picture!” If you look at a woman the wrong way in the workplace (or she says that you did) you risk being fired for sexual harassment. Ironically, it’s the sluttiest women who complain the most loudly and frequently about this type of “harassment”.

    Hi Hero,

You certainly don’t have to worry about those issues here. And taking real pictures of these women is pretty straightforward and fun if you approach them as a Tourist. They will consider it to be quite flattering and validating.

Time for me to start learning Russian…

Oh by the way, is there any way for me to get a list of all my posts? I’m looking for one that I made yesterday about older women seeking younger men, but I can’t find it.

  7. rw_man on 09/17/2006 at 6:36 pm

Hero.. Have you tried to do a search for your name in the search box at the top of the home page? Give that a shot..

  8. Hero on 09/17/2006 at 7:43 pm

Yeah, that didn’t work. Oh well.

  9. QuietRebel on 09/18/2006 at 4:41 am

Just for sharing with anyone who wants to learn Russian.

I already started to learn Russian. I’m already quite proficient with the Cyrillic alphabet. The cyrillic words are not so hard to read. It’s so fun to read those Cyrillic letters. I also taught myself to write Cyrillic on papers. I even can convert my name into Cyrillic version. It’s so fun. I have been learning few vocabulary words.

I got some good advices from some people on learning Russian. They told me that I should be very suspicious of books or materials written by non-native speakers. A fellow said that the best way to learn Russian is to watch Russian movies, first with the Russian subtitles turned on, and read simple Russian books written by native Russian speakers.

However, I feel that you really need to learn the cyrillic alphabet first and then practice handwriting those Cyrillic on the notepad.. pick any Russian words and practice writing them repeatedly until you feel comfortable about handwriting in Russian.

Once you are very comfortable with the Cyrillic letters and handwriting, you should learn the grammar. It’s kind of boring, but it’s necessary. With a very good understanding of grammar, you should be able to recognize the sentences when you are reading Russian.

Get an excellent Russian-English dictionary, lots of flash cards and a notebook…

While you are learning the grammar, you can watch those Russian movies. You should get a notebook with facing pages. On the right hand side, copy the entire dialogue of the Russian subtitles. THen, look up those Russian phrases and study them by flash cards. Put word definitions, grammatical notes on the facing page on the left of the notebook. Then, try to watch the movie without subtitles.

Good thing about movies is you can actually listen how those Russian pronounce words and sentences at the same time reading subtitles and watching those people’s actions while speaking. Also, the movie shows you very clear language with a lot of colloquial usages and everyday language without any of those useless crap or any academic agenda. It’s so much more fun learning Russian from watching movies than studying very dry textbooks.

Also, you can buy some simple Russian books written by native Russian authors and just read those books.. if you don’t understand any word, just look up.

Here are some of good Russian movies with Russian subtitles are…

    1. The Diamond Arm
    2. White Desert Sun
    3. The Irony of Fate
    4. Moscow Does not Believe in Tears
    5. Peculiarites of the National Fishing
    6. Ivan Vasilievich – Back to the Future
    7. Kidnapping Caucassian Style
    8. Gentlemen of Fortune
    9. Operation “Y” & Other Shuirk’s Adventures
    10. A Cruel Romance

…and there are more Russian movies you can find

While learning Russian through Russian movies or reading Russian books gives foundation of knowledge, the missing ingredient is that this method doesn’t give you the opportunity to learn how to talk to people in Russian. Obviously, the best solution is to make friends with Russian folks and practice Russian with them.

This poses a big challenge for any neophytes or first-timers since they don’t have any vocabulary or understanding of the language. It’s advisible to learn through movies with subtitles before you get to practice speaking Russian with those Russian folks.

    Wow QuietRebel..

    You the MAN! ;)

If you land here knowing the basics behind the language you are going to be treated like a rock star!

Keep up the great work and keep on studying and sharing your insights! More power to you Big Guy!

Right on GL and right on QuietRebel!

I agree that once the intimidation of learning a new language and alphabet can be overcome, the rewards will be endless!

This is especially important guys because YOU MUST FIND YOURSELVES A GREAT RUSSIAN GIRL… and she will love you more for every russian word you even try to say. (and it definitely helps you get in with the family)

My girlfriend (from Moscow for those who don’t already know) is never jealous. Just like GL was saying, she has an identity. She is, in my opinion, the embodiment of confidence, grace, and elegance – and she knows it, but never has to say that she does…

Needless to say – I never stop telling her how beautiful she is. The cool thing is that she could care less what anyone else thinks but ME. THAT is what I’m talking about!

I would also recommend “Russian Ark”. It’s one hell of a movie. The whole movie takes place in the Armitage in St. Petersburg and the most impressive thing is, the whole movie is shot in 1 take. You have to see this one.

I have noticed that my wife dresses very nice to impress me and here’s her reason. She doesn’t dress nice to impress other women, to try out the latest styles or even to make men’s heads turn (although she says that would be an added bonus). She does it because she wants to be the ONLY woman that I look (and leer) at. Amazing. And since I have been married to her, I have started to dress nicer around her only because I want to be the only man that she looks at. I have to ask her if she has a degree in Psychology that she’s not telling me about.

The more I read from RW_Man the more I fall in love with the country, the traditions and what to look forward to. It springs joy and hope in my heart.

Yes Hero. Yes you absolutely can look them up and down with impunity. In fact, you can do so two or three times or as many times as you want, and at worst nothing will happen, and they might even giggle about it, which is what often happened in Zakopane and Rydzyna. I’m talking about Polish women rather than Russian here, but you get the point.

It reminded me of how I went to Crimea last summer.
Was really nice to see all those places I remember from my childhood.
My boyfriend also made a kind of observation about women (I can’t really call all of them local, cos there were a lot of tourists from Russia and western Ukraine and the Crimean population is predominantly Russian by heritage so I’m gonna call them Russian and hope this will be forgiven)
The observation was the following : girls openly stare at lads with girlfriends. We were walking one busy street with lots of tourists on it when he asked me if I noticed anything. I didn’t, but then I looked closer I couldn’t stop giggling for the rest of the night. Girls would glance at me and then stare at him into the eyes for a long while until we would pass them by. Sometimes there would be 3 girls doing the same thing.
Could anyone translate these rituals to me?Would be very much appriciated.

I think the saying, “Forbidden fruit looks sweeter,” just about covers it..

    • Kisha on 10/16/2009 at 5:57 pm

Oh the competitive nature of Russian women!
      It was funny though.

  17. Galya on 05/20/2010 at 7:05 am

yes, this is really true but it doesnt mean its always good or acceptable. we find it flattering but its not always nice when you look up and down several times with that drooling look.
jealousy is better not to care of – for our own sakes as well as yours. if the man wants to leave me – something went wrong but its his choice and then he might as well go. i dont want anyone to stay only “because”.
i can feel jealous but then because of sadness of realizing he might be gone just the very next day – if it happens i’ll be really sad but he’s an asshole whom left me ;) his bad
