Sadness and Condolences for the Victims in Perm

12/06/2009
By

A terrible fire in a nightclub has killed 112 people in the city of Perm.

From my experience in these venues I would not be surprised if the majority of these victims were young women who were simply looking forward to an entertaining evening at a local club.

Although I personally have never been to Perm I’ve made a few friends from that city.

I’m aware that tragedies happen all the time.

But because of my proximity and familiarity to these events I am deeply saddened by this disaster.

My thoughts and prayers go out to those who were killed and injured.

Please take a moment out to do the same.

When I heard part of the news flash about a tragic club fire with over a hundred killed and a hundred more seriously injured, my heart sank in my chest. So many young people in such a vibrant place in their lives. It hurts to think of the pain those many families are going through. I will hold them in my prayers.

This really is a terrible tragedy – words can’t express the amount of pain experienced by the victims and all the others’ lives touched by those very losses.

I had intended to visit the night-clubs when I’m in Novosibirsk in two weeks time, but I may think twice about that. At least, I’ll be making a personal risk assessment when I enter, and decide if I want to stay based on what I see!

Not to detract from the great magnitude of the event, but it really does highlight a much wider (perhaps cultural?) issue with regard to Russia. The same sort of thinking that leads to so many deaths and accidents on the roads, is applied to situations like this – where was the common sense? Why did no one take all the facts into consideration? Why did no one bother to think about all those around them?

Why were there no (or inadequate) fire-suppression systems in a public venue? Who the hell thought it was a good idea use pyrotechnics?! Surely if a professional was used, they would have seen the venue was totally unsuitable – or if they did use a professional, how did that person not see what would happen? Why were there no evacuation procedures? Why were the escape exists so inadequate?

These are simple questions any venue owner should consider, and problems like this arise out of what I am seeing as a very common mentality.

Jonathan:There is too much corruption in Russia,it’s sad,but it’s true.
You should read about the fake capitalism of the 90,with mafia, how Galina Stavoroitova was killed, because she was a GREAT WOMEN,who standed with courage between a lot of corrupted people, between the mafia.
Many western people don’t know much about the real russian history and how the soviet union made the “sovok”,the real dimension of the soviet crimes maybe we will never would knew.
Not only the detsrucion of tens of millions of persons, the destruction of the human soul. The soviet people of 1980 was tired,in decadence, with a deep spiritual crisis.
I suggest you to read Solzhenitsyn and Bukovsky, great disidents.
Even with all the problems, russians are stil alive, they have a miracle of God,the only explanation, russians between 1917-1991 lost more than 100 millions, with the war(30 millions)and communist terror.
Russian soul has not died yet,the real russian women is the evidence. And will never die.
